There are a many ways of treating your skin – including facials, body wraps and body scrubs – making it feel and look healthier than before. More and more spas are adopting, investing in and inventing treatments to aid people in their journey to treating their skin better, as well as using and reviving age-old beauty treatments and traditions that were born a number of years ago – all in the name of health and beauty.
The hammam is one of these age-old rituals and treatments. Also known as a Turkish hammam or Turkish bath, the hammam is the Middle Eastern version of a steam bath, which can also be seen as a wet comparative of the sauna (where visitors sit in a small room that is designed as a place to experience dry heat sessions) but there is a notable focus on water instead of steam.
Hammams are a very important part of Moroccan culture and life, as public baths were – and still are – used in both urban and rural cities in the country, with Moroccans visiting a hammam to cleanse their bodies and scrub away dead skin cells.
In this article we are going to look at three hammams in Morocco – both public and those housed in hotels and resorts, as well as the processes they offer guests during their hammam experience, as each will vary depending on whether it is a public hammam or a private hammam.
Moroccan Hammam at Mazagan Beach & Golf Resort, El Jadida
Treat your body to this magical hammam experience at Mazagan Beach & Golf Resort while on holiday to Morocco. The Moroccan Hammam steam room will take you on a journey that will benefit your body and your skin in more ways than one.
Starting in the Moroccan Hammam steam room, the soothing steam cleans and cleanses your skin while eliminating any toxins, revitalizing and energizing your body. Next, on a warm marble table, your experience will continue as you receive a full exfoliation of the body that consists of using a traditional Moroccan glove (called a “Kiss”) and black soap, which will nourish and regenerate your skin.
There are the options to take part in just the Hammam Relaxation (where you are able to relax in the traditional Hammam), have a Traditional Hammam Scrub (where you can enjoy the cleansing steam, an invigorating body wash and a scrub), or combine the two.
Note: there are specific opening times as there are slots to accommodate women only, men only, and time slots where men and women are able to be in the hammam together.
Hammam Dar el-Bacha, Marrakech
As the city’s largest traditional public hammam that dates back to the 1930s, Hammam Dar el-Bacha is the public’s choice of hammam with women getting the prime afternoon and evening hours.
It is the city’s most famous hammam, boasting striking and incredible architectural features such as star-shaped vents in the building’s domed ceiling.
Hamman Dar el-Bacha used to be the hammam where staff and servants who worked in the nearby Dar el-Bacha palace would come to, to bath and cleanse themselves. This hammam is perfect for those who would like a more authentic experience, in one of the city’s oldest traditional hammams that still functions as such, with prices that will not break the bank.
This public hammam does not have a phone number or website, meaning that it is best to just show up at the address and take your experience from there – like the locals would.
Spa Laaroussa, Fes
Offering a private spa and hammam experience – in comparison to a more open and public experience you would have at a public hammam – Spa Laaroussa offers guests an authentic hammam with relaxing massages.
Decorated with Carrara marbles, guests can enjoy the spa’s authentic Moroccan steam room while being bathes by professional therapists and receiving an aromatic body scrub and ghassoul facial mask (which is mud applied and rubbed directly onto the skin).
Once this first part of the hammam experience is over, there is a rest period that is followed by a massage that is done with essential oils, candles, quiet music and delicate aromas – a completely different experience of that you would have at a public hammam.
Men and women are also welcome at Spa Laaroussa’shammam at the same time, and offer appointments every hour from 11 am until 9 pm.
Although stripping down to disposable underwear (for the ladies) or a loin cloth (for the men) is probably not one of the items listed on your bucket list, it is well worth doing while visiting a hammam, as your skin, your body and your mind will feel refreshed.
